May 7th Asparagus season came extra early this year, for this reason it will also end early- in about a week (What?!?). The early/hot/dry spring has lead to some interesting challenges on other parts of our farm and we are having to irrigate the asparagus much sooner than usual, we are also getting slightly skinnier spear on average which may be due to the cold contrast at night, or experimental changes in our fertilizer timing (a split application of nitrogen over the season rather than all at once). On the bright side, we haven’t seen as much pressure/damage from the Asparagus beetle as we had the past couple years. With the season being about a full month early (end of March) it has also coincided with one of our busiest times of year, spring planting, and I have been slow to drag myself inside to write this blog post. No more stalling, today is the day to write it and we’ve got a Mother’s Day/Spring/Summer/End of Season sale at our Farm Stand through Sunday the 10th: 3 bundles for $12.00 Bundles are 1.5 lbs each, as per usual. A big thanks to all of our regular customers, it has been a pleasure to see your enthusiasm for this unique early season vegetable. We continue to supply Frankie’s Restaurant, Vault 244, and Block 15 with asparagus, and are trying an experiment with compost to try and stretch our harvest season a bit so it can fit with common restaurant schedules of monthly menu features.
